My Greatest Return on Investment: People
One of the greatest lessons I learned at an early age came from a giant in the restaurant industry, Norman Brinken, founder of Brinken International, a restaurant conglomerate that founded such industry changing concepts as Steak and Ale, Bennigans, Chilis, Macaroni Grille and Maggianos. It was Norman who created the first salad bar and introduced the idea of casual dining in the chain restaurant concepts.
As a young Steak and Ale Manager in Miami, Florida in 1977, Norman, Chairman and CEO paid me a visit, took me to dinner and forever changed my life. At the tender age of 23, Norman told me I was a star and predicted great things for me. He had me at the star thing. He told me to find the best talent and not to worry about age, sex, or race, but be like the NFL draft and take the best player available. It was a valuable lesson and one I will never forget.
Laser Spine Institute: Recognized among Becker's ASC Review Top 100 Places to Work in Healthcare
As many of you know, I have always been extremely proud of the fact that 99% of our patients report that they would recommend Laser Spine Institute to a family member or friend. Now, what could possibly match that sentiment? If you know me personally, or have been reading my blog, you may also be able to tell that I am very passionate about my employees. So, you can imagine how thrilled I was to hear that Laser Spine Institute was recognized among the Top 100 Places to Work in Healthcare by Becker’s ASC Review, a bimonthly publication that provides the most current news, information and analysis relating to ambulatory surgical centers and hospitals.
Doing the Right Thing: The Greatest Reward
By now, readers of my blog, employees, and colleagues know how much I value doing the right thing. I received the email below from a prospective patient and cannot recall experiencing a greater sense of pride than I did when I read her comments.
Earning customer trust and confidence is not the easiest task, especially where health care services are concerned. Without the dedication and commitment of Laser Spine Institute's phenomenal staff and your continuous feedback through emails and comments, accomplishing this feat would not be possible. Both components have been essential attaining our goal of providing our patients the highest level of service.
Please feel free to comment on this post and share your experience, whether at Laser Spine Institute or other health care facilities.
Dear Bill:
Laser Spine Institute Salutes Our Veterans
As we reflect on the sacrifice of our servicemen and women this Veterans Day, I hope that we will also be challenged to give of ourselves. By emulating the selfless character they demonstrated in protecting our nation, we truly embrace the sentiment of this special observance.
My father served in five major battles of WWII, and was one of the first men to land on Omaha beach during the Normandy Invasion. During years of battle far from home and family, my dad experienced what was perhaps one of his greatest challenges: the passing of his father. To compound his grief, his military obligations prevented him from attending the funeral. Despite the grueling demands of combat, my dad remained steadfast in his commitment to our country.
Breast Cancer: A Personal Story of Challenge and Triumph
Next Monday, November 2nd marks an important day in the Horne household. My wife, Charlotte, will have her final reconstructive surgery to complete her recovery from breast cancer. She is now cancer free! This has been a long 14 month surgery, but one that she has handled with dignity and grace. Her positive spirit has truly been an inspiration to so many and the model on how to cope with such devastating news.
Charlotte was diagnosed in August, 2008 with triple negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive types. We were told that we had to hope we caught it early enough that it had not spread to her lymph nodes. A few days later, Dr. John Cox performed her surgery only to find a day later that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. As you can imagine, our hearts sunk and our family was devastated. But, as only Charlotte could do, she comforted the rest of the family. Her faith and spirit lifted the rest of us through a difficult time.
